The most beautiful beach

There is no doubt that the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean are beautiful. Recently, one of them celebrated 22 years as an “Área Natural Protegida Reserva Estatal Santuario de la Tortuga Marina” (State Reserve Protected Natural Area for the Marine Turtle), the bay of Xcacel-Xcacelito, a beautiful virgin beach that is located 20 kilometers north of Tulum, Quintana Roo.

Thanks to the excellent organization of citizens, it has remained free of tourism developments that would represent a risk for the ecosystem, since the bay is a favorite nesting place for sea turtles.

What made this date even more special is the fact that it was also certified as a “Class 1” beach by the Ibero-American Beach Management and Certification Network (Proplayas), making it the first beach in the world to obtain the recognition.

This certification is based on a scientific method that takes into account natural and human indicators and is part of a project to environmentally qualify the most popular tourist beaches in Latin America.

The Proplayas Network is present in 16 countries and has 60 working groups. Its members, many of whom are scientists and experts, work for a common cause, the importance of coastal ecosystems.

The requirements and procedures for the certification of beaches were defined, and as a result of this study, the Xcacel-Xcacelito Marine Turtle Sanctuary obtained the highest rating for its spectacular and well-preserved coastal landscape.
